Teens and Sexting

As texting has become a centerpiece in teen social life, parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly concerned about the role of cell phones in the sexual lives of teens and young adults. A new survey from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that 4% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to someone else via text messaging, a practice also known as “sexting”; 15% say they have received such images of someone they know via text message.http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=3955489348755908576

'Sexting' Teens Can Go Too Far

What happened to the time when if you liked a boy at school you'd pass him a note?
These days the disturbing new trend in teenage flirting is sending nude or semi-nude photos from cell phone to cell phone: instead of "texting," they call it called "sexting."
While the X-rated offerings are usually intended just for a boyfriend or girlfriend, the photos often wind up being shared.http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/WorldNews/sexting-teens/story?id=6456834

New Jersey Senate Approves Teen Sexting Bill

New Jersey lawmakers recently approved a bill that would treat "sexting" teens as misguided rather than criminals, in an attempt to educate minors instead of punishing them. The bill, approved overwhelmingly by the State Assembly in March, is now going to the Senate for final approval. If passed, juveniles caught sending sexually explicit photographs on their phones, an activity known as "sexting," would be forced to undergo intense educational programs rather than face criminal prosecution.http://www.mobiledia.com/news/95767.htmlhttp://www.mobiledia.com/news/95767.html

Teenage Sexting Statistics

In a recent survey posted by The National Campaign, some alarming statistics about teenage sexting were uncovered. Sexting seems to be the newest craze among teenagers and it is a very dangerous craze. Sexting is when a person takes a flirtatious, nude or semi-nude picture of their self and sends it to others through their cell phone or other means of texting device.http://www.pcsndreams.com/Pages/Sexting_Statistics.htmlhttp://www.pcsndreams.com/Pages/Sexting_Statistics.html

Sexting, Cyber Bullies and Textual Harassment

National Cyber Awareness Day reminds parents, teachers, and youth mentors the importance of talking about cyber bullying, sexting, and more.
Sexting. Cyber bullying. Harassment via electronic communication. Perhaps today—National Cyber Awareness Day—is the time to talk to your children about these modern dangers. The odds are high that your child will eventually be the victim of cyber bullying. According to Safe America, 50 percent of teens admit to being bullied online or by text message. Our youth don't have to be victims of cyber bullying or crime if parents and adults teach kids how to cope.http://dallas-hiram.patch.com/articles/sexting-cyber-bullies-and-textual-harassment-2

Sexting: Loss of control = Embarrassment, bullying & potential prosecution

In the first column of this pair of postings, I introduced a discussion of the widespread and increasing practice by young people of sending lewd text and pornographic photos or videos of themselves to friends – only to find the material being distributed publicly and completely out of their control. Today I continue with thoughts on causes and consequences of sexting.

From cyber bullying to sexting (stats and videos): What's on your kids' cell?

Many adults tend to glamorize their childhood days. Selective memorization has a way of recalling only the best of times, often leaving out the emotional struggles, the hurt and heartaches, the lack of being accepted, and the peer-pressure and angst that accompanied our long lost adolescence. Growing up was tough back in the day. News flash: it’s no easier for today’s youth, especially considering the technology available at every teen’s fingertips.

From cyber bullying to sexting (stats and videos): What's on your kids' cell?

Cyberbullying and sexting are not new social occurrences, but have come to the forefront recently due to the fact that in a few extreme instances, these technological phenomena have led to teen suicides (see videos below) and even more recently – the fall from grace of a sports icon (‘nuff said about Tiger Woods), and child pornography charges issued against some who shared sexy photos using a cell phone or computer . read more...

13-year-old Hope Witsell hanged herself after topless photos circulated

Hope Witsell was just beginning the journey from child to teen. The middle-school student had a tight-knit group of friends, the requisite poster of “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson and big plans to become a landscaper when she grew up.

But one impetuous move robbed Hope of her childhood, and eventually, her life. The 13-year-old Florida girl sent a topless photo of herself to a boy in hope of gaining his attention. Instead, she got the attention of her school, as well as the high school nearby. read more...

Dealing with Text Message Bullying

Parents and teachers are becoming more and more savvy about protecting kids from cyber bullying—harassment using technology, such as email, instant messaging, or social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. But during the upcoming spring break, when kids have more unstructured time than usual, they are also at risk of exposure to bullying through text messaging (“text bullying”), or even being “sexted,” using the text-messaging feature on cell phones, which a reported 87 percent of teens own (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, 2008). read more...
